Item Description

Beautiful, sustainable bamboo is one of the most popular materials around for gardens and home décor. This highly regarded introduction to the material is now back in print, revised and updated. It still offers rich history, fascinating background, and great projects, but with more than 20 new images—making this the most attractive source on the “it” plant of the green movement.
From weathering the plant and preventing insect damage to attaching, bending, flattening, finishing, and preserving the bamboo, this photo-filled introduction covers it all. More than 30 how-to projects include a curved garden handrail, low trellis for climbing plants, porch swing, and even an outdoor shower stall. Lush photography and abundant illustrations make the book a visual treat.

  1. Mary A. Swaty says:

Nicely illustrated with good instructions. However, what I was looking for were bamboo projects that I could adapt to use the giant reed that grows in my yard. I didn’t find this inspiring for my purposes, but the sections on tools and techniques are useful.

  2. Patricia Barber says:

A beautifully illustrated and very informative book that details bamboo types, growing conditions and best of all, how to turn this wonderful plant into useful projects. The gates, in particular, inspire the reader to get right out there and build them because they are such a worth while and gorgeous addition to any garden. Smaller projects, such as garden trellises, are entirely manageable and the furniture building ideas spark creativity. I built a a 6 foot wide by 5 foot tall trellis to support peas that has really added to the beauty of my vegatable garden and elicits great comments from neighbors and passers-by alike. I need to add that the book was so fairly priced I couldn’t pass it up.

When at all possible, I look for books at the library first, check them out and decide from there whether they are worth adding to my collection permanently. This book made the grade in my opinion! Great pictures, wonderful projects and complete instructions to produce your own. For those with a source of bamboo readily available, I highly recommend this book. For those, like myself, who do not have a resource for bamboo nearby, my thoughts run to willow and other fairly straight, smooth watersprouts and limbs from trees. In any case, this book gave me projects and ideas, which is why I added it to my collection.

Carol, I received your revised & updated book and I LOVE it! I really like the new chapters on bamboo’s eco-friendly properties and think they add a lot to an already exceptional book! As a lover of all things bamboo, your book has made me appreciate even more its beauty and function, and the importance of bamboo in local and global eco-systems!

I would recommend this bamboo cult classic to anyone who is interested in unique green home and garden projects, bamboo as an alternative to wood and fossil fuels, and gorgeous photographs of this graceful, renewable grass…one of the world’s oldest and greenest natural resources!

GO CRAFT AND ART OF BAMBOO!

  5. Michael James-Long says:

There are very few texts about bamboo that educate and qualify as a hands-on learning guide. This is the best available.

Revised and updated with chapters emphasizing bamboo’s “eco-friendly properties” and its future as a wood alternative and biofuel, The Craft & Art of Bamboo, Revised & Updated: 30 Eco-Friendly Projects to Make for Home & Garden by Carol Stangler, should be in everyone’s library with an interest in this ubiquitous plant.

You WILL enjoy! Also makes a great gift.
